San Diego Humane Society Adoptions Center

The San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Johnson & Jennings is proud to be a partner with this amazing organization in support of their ongoing mission.

This 34,600-sf state-of-the-art animal care and adoptions facility project was a full building renovation to the San Diego Humane Society’s Gaines St. Main Campus. This new upgraded facility includes animal habitats, outdoor exercise yards along with a newly designed lobby with a retail Petco component that collectively brings a more interactive experience for those coming to explore pet adoption. More specifically, this build-out incorporated 58 dog rooms, 55 cat kennels, 11 communal cat rooms, one large cat “aquarium”, specialized consultation areas, and 53 small animal enclosures.

The renovated facility incorporated several new features that help animals feel calm and at home in their enclosures. Solar tubes for natural light and den-like housing were installed for dogs. The kennels were angled so the dogs do not have a direct view of each other, and the habitats were sound proofed along with calming music and pink noise. The drainage system was redesigned to make it easier for shelter staff to clean up, so they can have more time to spend with the animals. The expanded outdoor play areas include more play yards for dogs and outdoor “catios” for cats, which offer additional space for exercise and mental stimulation.
